Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

There are many types of therapy from which to choose. Why or when might someone consider psychoanalytic psychotherapy, a more emotionally and time-intensive approach?

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is interested in addressing the roots of long-standing problems and repeating patterns. It is based on the view that there are many underlying factors, including early experiences, that people are often unaware of that influence why they do and feel the things they do.

Take for example, language acquisition. We’re not aware of having learned our native language(s). We simply speak it and have done so our entire lives. Similarly, we are not aware of having learned the emotional language we speak to both ourselves and others. Sometimes, it is helpful or even necessary to learn a new language. Like learning a new foreign language, learning new emotional language takes time. Furthermore, learning new emotional language can’t be done alone.

In psychoanalytic treatment, we will meet consistently in order to develop a supportive working relationship that can help you attend more deeply to internal processes and begin to understand yourself differently. This insight in turn can lead to feeling greater freedom and flexibility, and consequently, greater possibilities for meaningful, lasting change.
